Obituary for Beverley James Lowe

Beverley James (Jim) Lowe, Rear Admiral US Navy, age 87, died peacefully at home on February 13, 2017.

He was born on June 4, 1929 to Frank D and Edna (nee Harkins) Lowe in Keyser WV. He graduated in 1947 from Salamanca High school in New York. Jim attended Columbia University in NYC on a Navy scholarship and graduated in 1951 with a major in math and physics. Upon graduation he entered the Navy as an Ensign and was stationed in New London, CT. Subsequently, he was assigned to Submarine Officers School. After two years of submarine operations, he was selected for a three year program at MIT where he received the advanced degrees of Naval Engineer and Master of Science with a specialty in nuclear engineering in 1958. He spent 33 years in the Navy and retired as a Rear Admiral in 1984. Jim spent many years after his navy career working in the private sector utilizing his skills he developed in the service as Program Manager, Vice President, and CEO's of various corporations.

Jim retired from the private sector in 1997 and resided for 17 years in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He was a voracious reader, loved to travel and continued to volunteer his time in working at the community and state level. He was instrumental in the return of ROTC to Columbia University. After his wife's death in 2013 he moved to Florida for his last years.

Jim will be especially remembered for his perseverance in the face of adversity, his loyalty and faithfulness to family and country, and his exceptional wit in the form of numerous practical jokes.

He is survived by son Steven Lowe of Kintnersville Pa, son Paul Lowe of Doylestown Pa, Daughter Kim Chalkley and Dave Russell of Ormond Bch, Fl, and daughter and husband Pam Krieger and John of Glen Burnie Maryland. He is also survived by 5 grandchildren, Amy Lowe of St.Louis Missouri, John Lowe of Philidelphia, PA, Laura Krieger of Berlin, Md, David Krieger of Baltimore, Md. and Caitlin Chalkley of Ormond Beach, FL. Additional survivors include his sister-in-law Maureen Lowe of NJ and his 6 nieces Meghan, Maureen, Kathleen, Erin, Mary Shawn and Aileen. He was predeceased by his brother Brenton Lowe and wife Suzette Lowe.

Burial will take place at Arlington National Cemetery.
