Obituary for Ernest "Ernie" Cornelius

Ernest  "Ernie"  Cornelius
Ernest (Ernie) Cornelius, 92 of Ormond Beach, Florida passed away on Saturday, May 20, 2017 at “The Sarah House III” Ormond Beach. He was born September 20, 1924 in Williamsburg, Kentucky to Lawrence and Carie Cornelius. Ernie graduated from Williamsburg High School. After high school, he moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, he returned to Williamsburg to attend Cumberland College and graduated in 1944. Ernie began his railroad career in Cincinnati 1946 and retired in 1983. At the time of his retirement, Ernie was manager of Customer Service for the Southeast Region with the Burlington Northern Railway in Atlanta, Ga.
Ernie married Wanda Peyton in 1947 in Kentucky. He is survived by his daughter, Delores Braley and her husband Terry of Ormond Beach, and by his son, Gary Cornelius of Neenah, Wisconsin, by his granddaughter, Dr. Jaima Woodiwiss, and her two children. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Alice Sommons of Lexington, Kentucky. Ernie was preceded in death by his wife 57 years, Wanda in 2004.
Ernie was a former member of South Elkhorn Christian Church in Lexington, Kentucky. He and Wanda relocated and called Ormond Beach their home in 1999. He was a long time member of the First Christian Church, Daytona Beach. He served as a Deacon and volunteered in several other areas of the church.
In his spare time, Ernie enjoyed traveling and playing golf with his friends, and of course volunteering at the church. Funeral Services will be celebrated on Thursday, May 25th at 7:00 pm at Lohman Funeral Home; 733 W. Granada Blvd. Ormond Beach. The family will begin receiving friends at 5:00 p.m. Additional services and entombment will be held in Nicholasville, Kentucky.
